Nurburgring: A look back at 2010

663_r11_race2_podiumMax Biaggi started off the weekend in style by scoring pole position in front of Checa, Toseland and Guintoli, while his direct rival for the title, Haslam, was in sixth, behind Jonathan Rea.

And it was Rea fastest off the line, taking the lead in front of Checa and Biaggi, who were soon passed by Haga, however a crash by Haslam in the Mercedes Arena halted the race: Guintoli and Corser were also involved and their bikes couldn't be removed in time. Haslam came off worst from this accident: he had to line up for the re-start with a dislocated thumb and pain in his knee ligaments. On the re-start Checa and Biaggi were slightly off-line at the first turn, allowing Rea to take the lead again in front of the Spaniard, Haga and Sykes, who was starting from eighth. During the opening lap two big names dropped out of the race: Troy Corser went wide at the hairpin and also took off Guintoli; the pair kept on going, but they were out of contention for the leading spots. Biaggi's chances looked slim: he was eighth at the end of the first lap, while in front Rea, Checa and Haga pulled away. The following lap was decisive for Rea's breakaway: Haga and Checa fought hard for second, Haga eventually was able to snatch the place from the Spaniard, but Jonathan was long gone and won. Behind him there was a notable list of fallers: Fabrizio on the fifth lap and Haga on the eighth, while trying to contain Checa. These two falls enabled Crutchlow to take a comfortable and lonely third, while Biaggi was able to climb up to fourth, passing Haslam on the second lap and Sykes on the sixth.

The three riders who fought for the win in race one: Rea, Haga and Checa, were also the only ones able to contest the win in race two, leaving a cautious Biaggi to take care of the rest of the field. Biaggi had Crutchlow and Haslam behind him, but wasn't able to handle properly the first braking point and was passed by both men from the fifth to the seventh lap. Once behind them, his pace eventually improved and had only to watch his back for Sylvain Guintoli. Haga took the lead on the fourth lap, and Checa in turn had a tough time in resisting Rea's attacks: the Briton had no intention of leaving Haga free and on the following lap, at the same spot, tried to overtake the Spaniard, going wide. The race order didn't change after this mistake in the following laps: the gaps between riders widened and Checa, trying to keep up with Haga, crashed at the RTL-Kurve, deciding the outcome of the first two places. Rea wasn't able to catch Haga, who won and Haslam, the first of the bunch of riders fighting for third: with him Crutchlow, Biaggi and Guintoli.
