Troy Bayliss: simply the best!
The recent Czech Round of the Superbike World Championship saw an update of a series of official statistics presented to the media before the Brno race weekend.
Using a system normally applied to basketball as the basis, three different rankings were drawn up by the championship's official timekeepers Perugia Timing; victories, pole positions and podiums, based on the ratio between results obtained and number of race participations.
The best rider overall proved to be Australian Troy Bayliss, who retired from racing at the end of 2008 after winning his third World Superbike title. Troy, who continues to be a true icon for all fans of bike racing, has in fact the highest score in each of the three categories. He scored 52 wins out of 152 races, a percentage ratio of 34.21%, stepping onto the podium 94 times (61.84%), with 26 pole positions to his name (34.60%).
Carl Fogarty's 59 wins give the four-time WSBK champion a percentage ratio of 26.81%, while his 109 podiums give him a 49.54% score; in the pole category his slightly less total of 21 times gives him a 19.44% score in this category.
The two-time WSBK champion Colin Edwards has taken part in 175 races, winning 31 (17.71%), stepping onto the podium 75 times (42.85%) and taking 15 poles (17.00%).
Troy Corser, called the ‘King of Superpole', has taken 43 in 367 races, equivalent to 23.02%, but a win ratio of only 8.99% (33), while thanks to his 130 podiums he has a 35.42% percentage.
Despite only taking part in 106 races, before a crash brought an end to his career, Giancarlo Falappa has a win ratio of 14.95% (16), a podium ratio of 28.30% (30) and a pole ratio of 15.10% (8).
At the other end of the scale the reigning world champion Max Biaggi, up until the Brno race, can count on 12.39% win ratio (15), a 47.10% podium ratio (57) and a 5% pole ratio (3) out of a total of 121 races.
The statistics issued only take account of riders who have more than 100 Superbike races to their name, excluding a certain Ben Spies who won exactly half of the 28 WSBK races he took part in during his single 2009 season, scoring 17 podiums and 11 poles along the way.
