Mid-season report: Superstock 600

011_r04_lanusse_gridAfter four different winners in four races this year's UEM European Superstock 600 Championship will be back in action on July 9th at the Automotodrom Brno for the halfway point of the 2011 season. This year's series is proving to be more exciting than ever, with numerous surprises thrown up at every round, but with the constant factor of Frenchman Romain Lanusse consolidating his leadership thanks to a regular sequence of results. In the opening four rounds the MRS Yamaha Racing France man has never been off the podium, the 16 year-old protégé of Adrien Morillas scoring 81 points, enough for a 20 point lead over his closest rival Jed Metcher.

MTM-RT Motorsports Yamaha's Australian rider, who won on his debut in the series last year at Magny-Cours, is paying for his Monza mistake, when he crashed out and left the road clear for Lanusse to gain an advantage. But payback time came one month later at Misano, where he finished second in the rain, and then at Alcaniz's Motorland Aragon where a dominant win allowed him to make up the points gap.

Although the battle for the title appears to be between these two, the 150 points still up for grabs could allow Dino Lombardi (Martini Corse Yamaha) to recover from the Brno round onwards. 35 points however are a big gap, and even more so for Riccardo Russo, Team Trasimeno Yamaha's candidate for victory, who is 52 points behind.

Still not out of the title fight are Assen winner Michael Van Der Mark of the Ten Kate Honda Junior Team, as well as Gauthier Duwelz (MTM-RT Motorsports Yamaha), who scored a spectacular third place at Aragon. While the emerging talents from the under-22 Superstock category must also include American Joshua Day (Racedays Kawasaki), who was third at Monza as well as French Federation ‘flag-bearer' Stephane Egea of the ASPI Yamaha team, and Nelson Major (Yamaha Falcone Competition), while the jury is still out on the potential of the young American Austin DeHaven, who moved to Europe after winning the prestigious domestic AMA Supersport title, but who has just four points to his name.
